The new executive and his team join a new division, MicrosoftAl, while the group maintains its alliance with OpenAl.
Microsoft is increasing its investment in artificial intelligence (AI), a move that has helped it become the world’s most valuable company, partly due to its partnership with OpenAl. The company’s CEO, Satya Nadella, has announced the recruitment of Mustafa Suleyman, one of the founders of Google-owned DeepMind, who was formerly the head of Inflection, another Al company he co- founded. Alongside Suleyman, Karén Simonyan, co-founder and chief scientist of Inflection, is also joining Microsoft. With their arrival, Microsoft is creating a new organization called Microsoft Al, focused on advancing its Al tool Copilot and other consumer and research products. Suleyman will serve as executive vice president and CEO of Microsoft Al, joining the senior management team and reporting directly to Nadella. Simonyan will join as Chief Scientist, under Suleyman. Several members of the Inflection team are also joining Microsoft, including some of the world’s leading Al engineers and researchers. Nadella maintains that Microsoft’s Al innovation will continue to be based on the company’s strategic alliance with OpenAl, with the new recruits serving to strengthen this partnership. Current executives and teams from Copilot, Bing, Edge, and the generative Al area will now report to Suleyman. Nadella has revamped Microsoft’s main products around OpenAl’s Al technology, integrating an Al assistant into products like Windows, Office software for businesses and consumers, Bing, and security tools. Kevin Scott remains as chief technology officer and executive vice president of Al, responsible for Al strategy, including all system architecture decisions, partnerships and alliances. Rajesh Jha continues as executive vice president of Experiences and Devices and will continue building Copilot for Microsoft 365, in collaboration with Suleyman and his team. Nadella concludes that the infusion of new talent will allow Microsoft to accelerate its pace, with a real opportunity to build technology previously thought impossible, in line with its mission to ensure the benefits of Al reach all people and organizations on the planet, safely and responsibly.
