Japanese Takeo Kanade wins Borders award for giving robots a sense of sight

The BBVA Foundation awards the computer scientist who has created fundamental mathematical algorithms for machines to see and understand real-life scenes

Japanese researcher Takeo Kanade has been awarded the Frontiers of Knowledge Prize in Information and Communication Technologies by the BBVA Foundation for his contribution to the development of mathematical foundations that promoted artificial vision and the perception of the robots. Its algorithms have allowed computers and robots to understand and interpret visual images and scenes, revolutionizing technologies such as robotic surgery, autonomous driving and facial recognition. The prize includes an endowment of 400,000 euros. Kanade has expressed concern about the possible malicious use of technologies developed from his research, such as deepfakes.
