A new regulation allows adults over 18 years old in the European country to have up to three cannabis plants at home.
The long–awaited day in Germany finally arrived as around 1,500 people gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in central Berlin to celebrate the partial legalization of cannabis. The celebration, marked by fireworks, music and marijuana, lasted about 40 minutes before the police dispersed the crowd. The law, which came into effect on April 1, allows adults over 18 to possess up to 50 grams of dried cannabis at home, carry a maximum of 25 grams on the street, and grow up to three cannabis plants at home. However, smoking in public areas is restricted, especially near children and youth facilities. Though the law was passed amidst strong opposition, it aims to curb the black market and decriminalize users. Despite the legalization, consumers will have to wait three months to legally purchase marijuana from social cannabis clubs, which will be able to cultivate cannabis under strict state control.
