How to exercise safely during pregnancy for the mother and the baby

Recent research shows that exercising following the specialistsrecommendations reduces the risk of complications during pregnancy, as well as facilitating childbirth and recovery

The common practice of overprotecting pregnant women and encouraging them to limit their activities has been challenged by scientific literature over the past three decades. Carmen Gutiérrez, a gynecologist at Madrid’s 12 de Octubre Hospital, emphasizes that staying active during pregnancy is as important as maintaining a healthy diet and undergoing routine medical check- ups. Despite expert advice, less than 20% of women globally follow the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 150 minutes of physical exercise per week. Research from the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM) in 2023 showed that pregnant women who engage in physical activity can reduce the risk of excessive weight gain and gestational diabetes by 32% and 38% respectively. Physical activity can also decrease the likelihood of cesarean sections by 13% and instrumental delivery by 16%. Maintaining activity during pregnancy can also expedite postpartum recovery. Daily physical exercise of around 25 minutes, divided over six days, is recommended. Pregnant women can engage in almost any activity tailored to their individual circumstances, including walking, pilates, and swimming. Sessions for pregnant women should include aerobic exercises, muscle strengthening, balance and coordination, pelvic floor work, and relaxation. A specialist should guide any physical activity performed by a pregnant woman. However, individual attention is often inaccessible due to its cost, making group classes a more viable option. Healthcare professionals play a crucial role in raising awareness about the importance of exercise during pregnancy. However, the lack of public offerings often limits their advocacy, particularly affecting women with fewer resources. Experts call for greater investment in designing extensive physical activity programs for pregnant women
