Both bills aim to standardize the conditions of 26,000 professionals in the sector at a national level

In an attempt to regulate the working conditions of wildfire firefighters, the Spanish Council of Ministers has approved two legislative projects. These initiatives aim to establish a stable framework for both forest firefighters and environmental agents, given the increasing frequency of extreme weather events due to climate change. The legislation will standardize the roles and responsibilities of these professionals, who currently operate under varying conditions depending on the region. The laws, recognizing the increasing importance of these roles in the face of year-round fire risks, will define their duties in extinguishing fires, prevention, surveillance, public information, and support during natural and rural emergencies. The government also intends to strengthen the anticipatory and coordination capacities for wildfires, enhance risk assessment, and ensure a year-round presence across the country. The laws are expected to be passed before the summer, pending parliamentary processing.
