One hundred years of Claude Sautet, the master of sober and adult cinema despised by the ‘cahieristas’

The French director left behind titles such as The Things of Life’, A Heart in Winter, and ‘Nelly and Mr. Arnaud‘

Claude Sautet, known for his solitary characters who often acted strangely in love, directed films between 1960 and 1995. His characters were often socially, economically, morally, and intellectually lost individuals. Despite only directing 13 films, Sautet’s work was admired by the likes of Jean-Pierre Melville and François Truffaut, even though he was initially dismissed by the members of the Cahiers du Cinéma magazine. His work, which includes masterpieces such as «A Risky Business» and «Nelly and Mr. Arnaud,» is now available on various platforms. Sautet, who would have turned 100 this February 23, was an admirer of jazz and filmmakers like Howard Hawks and John Ford. His career was divided into two main themes: gritty crime dramas and stories about mature bourgeois individuals united by failure. His characters, often portrayed by stars like Michel Piccoli, Yves Montand, Romy Schneider, and Emmanuelle Béart, continue to captivate audiences with their complex personalities and struggles
