‘Macarena’: the eventful life of the planetary anthem has no end

Thirty years later, people continue to claim their piece of glory (and money) from the song by Los del Río that the whole world sang and danced to

Antonio Romero, one half of the duo Los del Río, known for the worldwide hit «Macarena», recalls composing the song in minutes, making it the fastest song he’s ever written. The song, which became popular globally, has had its share of controversies, with multiple people claiming rights to its success. This includes Diana Patricia Cubillán, the dancer who inspired the song, and Seju Monzón, a musician who claims «Macarena» plagiarizes a song from his 70s group. Despite these disputes, the song remains a well-known anthem, and its journey is detailed in a documentary called «Macarena«. The original version of «Macarena» was released in 1993, but it was a remix by Big Toxic in the same year that gained international attention. This remixed version was further modified by the Miami group, Bayside Boys, which added English lyrics and made it a hit in the U.S.
