The writer had already received the Man Booker International Prize in 2015. The jury highlighted «the narrative power that envelops, reveals, conceals, and transforms the reality of the world.»
Hungarian writer László Krasznahorkai, 70, has been announced as the recipient of the 2024 Formentor de las Letras Prize. The award is given for his ability to envelop, reveal, hide and transform the world’s reality through his powerful narrative style, and for his construction of the fascinating labyrinths of literary imagination. Some of his notable works include «Satanic Tango,» «War and War,» and «The Melancholy of Resistance,» all of which have been published in Spain and translated by Adam Kovacsis. His work is often shrouded in mystery, and he is known for his reluctance to give interviews. His books have been adapted into films by filmmaker Béla Tarr, a close collaborator since 1988. Krasznahorkai has been compared to Kafka, Thomas Bernhard, Gogol, and Bulgakov and admired by Susan Sontag and W. G. Sebald. He often criticizes the contemporary acceleration due to technological hyper- development and believes that people are increasingly detached from reality. He also condemns the annihilation of ancient traditions due to our constant connection to screens. He is known for writing about people who have experienced and lived through these issues, not about himself. He has a keen interest in the Orient, and has written about a legendary Japanese garden in his book «To the North the Mountain, to the South the Lake, to the West the Road, to the East the River.» Despite the poetic musicality in his prose, he chose to write novels and essays, allowing music and poetry to permeate his work.
