Intuitive Machines’ spacecraft carries on board half a dozen instruments to prepare for the future astronauts’ landing.
Odiseo, a lunar spacecraft by Intuitive Machines, is equipped with half a dozen tools intended to pave the way for future astronaut landings. NASA has decided to open the market to private companies, some focused on transportation like SpaceX, and others on constructing equipment traditionally designed by the agency. Odiseo carries a small quartz prism reflector, which will assist future lunar vehicles by reflecting laser beams to accurately measure distance. It also carries other equipment to measure descent speed and height, and to study the size and dynamics of mineral fragments during landing, among others. Lastly, it has a new system to precisely calibrate the remaining fuel in its tanks. Odiseo also has room for six more private payloads, including a sample of insulating fabric for sportswear, a video camera to document the landing, and a sculpture by Jeff Koons.
