How water consumption at home changes during a drought: «I flush one of every two times I go to the bathroom»

In Spain, 133 litres of water are spent per person per day, most of which goes to the shower, sink and toilet. Older washing machines can spend three times as much per wash as the more efficient and dishwasher is better than hand washing

The severe drought affecting Barcelona and its metropolitan area is changing the habits of its inhabitants, with water-saving measures such as flushing toilets less frequently. The average urban water supply in Spain is 245 liters per person per day, with households accounting for 67% of this usage, according to the Spanish Association of Water and Sanitation Supplies. Catalonia has declared a drought emergency, limiting water consumption to 200 liters per person per day, while Andalusia has imposed a limit of 160 liters in Malaga and certain municipalities in Cadiz. Water consumption in Barcelona is 105 liters per person per day, according to the Metropolitan Area of Barcelona. The most water-consuming appliances are washing machines and dishwashers, with the latter using between 8 and 16 liters per use. Measures to save water include using flow-reducing devices on taps, taking showers instead of baths and installing dual flush tonets.
