Successfully launched ‘Odiseo’, the ship with which the US wants to return to the Moon half a century later

Intuitive Machines module aims to become the first private device to land on satellite next week

Intuitive Machines’ Odiseo module has been successfully launched onto the Moon aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 from Cape Canaveral, Florida. If successful, it will be the first private module and the first U.S. ship to land on the Moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. Odysseus carries six devices that NASA wants to place on the satellite. The launch was done with the Falcon 9 powered for the first time with methane. The module also carries 12 payloads, including an urn with sculptures by artist Jeff Koons. This mission, part of NASA’s CLPS initiative, seeks to land near the crater Malapert A, an icy region of the lunar south pole. NASA has paid $118 million to the company to carry its instruments.
