The main medical societies and organizations related to the fight against tobacco support the Ministry of Health’s plan.
The Ministry of Health’s anti-smoking plan has met its first obstacle during processing. Last week, public health directors from PP-governed councils requested time to make allegations just as the plan was about to reach the National Health System’s Interterritorial Council. However, Health Minister Mónica García has received support from major medical societies and anti- smoking associations to publish the plan as soon as possible. The plan includes expanding smoke-free areas, tightening legislation on products like vaping, and raising taxes among other measures. Ramón Reyes, president of the Spanish Association Against Cancer, supports the plan, emphasizing its importance for the country’s health, especially for the youth. He insists on the necessity of regulating places like terraces and protecting non-smokers‘ freedom. Reyes also expresses concern over the trivialization of vaping among young people and its potential health hazards. He suggests that if vaping is meant to help quit smoking, it should be sold in pharmacies and prescribed by a doctor. Despite political climate, Reyes hopes that politicians will not miss this opportunity to support these measures for the sake of public health.
