The government agrees to distribute 70 million to the municipalities of Doñana as compensation for reducing the strawberry crop

«The purpose of these funds is to facilitate the diversification of economic activity in the territoriesstated the Secretary of State for the Environment after meeting with mayors.

The Ministry for the Ecological Transition (Miteco) has reached an agreement with 14 local governments in the area surrounding the Doñana Natural Park, as part of a €350 million plan between the Government and the Andalusian Regional Government to restore the natural area. The agreement includes a distribution of €70 million in aid, intended to stimulate economic diversification and adapt to a new reality where strawberries and red fruits will no longer be the main source of income and employment. This is part of the restructuring process approved in November 2023. The aid will be distributed based on criteria such as area, population, GDP, and socio-economic conditions of each municipality. These funds must be used for five intervention areas: water cycle, energy efficiency, sustainable mobility, renaturalisation of cities, and projects linked to territorial sustainability. The goal is to advance 50% of these funds this year and the other half in 2025, with a total execution horizon of 2027.
